Pochettino hoping Chelsea can build momentum after Brighton win
  + stars: | 2023-09-28 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
Sept 28 (Reuters) - Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino said his team "fully deserved" Wednesday's 1-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion in the League Cup and hopes the result will help kickstart their stuttering Premier League campaign. Chelsea are 14th in the league after only one win from six games so far, having drawn two and lost three, and have managed just five goals in the competition. I think it's important to go through in the competition, build our trust and the momentum. Left back Ben Chilwell was forced off late in the contest, with Pochettino saying it appeared to be a hamstring injury. Chelsea return to Premier League action on Sunday with a trip to Fulham.

[1/5] Soccer Football - Champions League - Quarter Finals - First Leg - Real Madrid v Chelsea - Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid, Spain - April 12, 2023 Real Madrid's Karim Benzema celebrates scoring their first goal with teammates REUTERS/Albert GeaMADRID, April 12 (Reuters) - European champions Real Madrid beat 10-man Chelsea 2-0 in their Champions League quarter-final, first leg courtesy of a tap-in by Karim Benzema and a powerful strike by substitute Marco Asensio in the Spanish capital on Wednesday. Benzema, the scourge of Chelsea at the same stage of the competition last season, converted from point blank range in the 21st minute when Kepa Arrizabalaga saved from Vinicius Junior but could only touch the ball in the direction of the Frenchman. Chelsea went close to scoring in the first half through Joao Felix and Raheem Sterling but they were thwarted by Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois playing against his former club. The win at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium puts the 14-time European champions in the driver's seat ahead of the second leg at Chelsea's Stamford Bridge on April 18. It was only the second league win in 10 matches for the home side who remain in an unaccustomed 10th place half-way through the season. Today we had five young players in the starting 11, they are doing a really good job at the moment." "Today we are happy for the three points," said Potter, who took over from Thomas Tuchel in September. Palace are in 12th place, six points behind Chelsea. Before kickoff, former Chelsea players who had been coached by or appeared alongside Gianluca Vialli joined the teams to pay tribute to the former Italy international and Chelsea player-manager who died 10 days ago.

Now, Southgate is going further and further down his list just to fill seats on the plane. "The Chelsea medical staff have not given me a percentage of my chance of being back for the World Cup. Maguire has been a regular throughout Southgate's tenure, but has been demoted at United, starting only three league games this season. Rooney later suggested that going to the 2002 World Cup injured and playing through the pain was a mistake. Southgate's dilemma is does he risk defenders who have served him so well but aren't at 100%, or give others a chance.
